With the new year coming soon, there are a few big changes that we are excited to announce, with more to come in the next few months.
We were very excited to have new people reach out about our lamb and beef sales. We had an increase in sales with both lamb and beef sales from 2021 and look forward to watching sales continue to increase in 2023 as well!
On the cattle side of things, we made the decision to dispersal some of our breeding herd. With input costs rising and cattle pricing not, we have decided to disperse 75% of our herd. We will be keeping a small herd to keep your freezers full for you. Our cows came home from their summer pastures in November, calves were weaned, and we have started going through our cows for dispersal.
With the cattle herd being more manageable, we will be custom grazing and selling forage as new income. Due to the lack of moisture these past few years and added stress on our pastures, we hope these changes will help restore our grass and get it back to healthy, regenerative land.
We had a great lambing year, with a 1.6 lambing rate, which is almost to our 1.8 rate goal. We had an almost 50/50 split with ram and ewe lambs with a few extra boys. Something new that we will be trying for lambing this year is splitting our lambing into 2 seasons. With the help of our newest sheep purchase of 10 Katahdins and 10 Dorpers, we will be lambing in the fall also. This means in 2024 we will have lamb ready to harvest come Easter and early summer just in time for grill season. Our 60 wool ewes will still be lambing starting April for fall lamb.
More news to come as we continue to make changes.
